Chandigarh: Gagandeep Singh had been suffering from cervical disorders for more than three years. Desk jobs and a sedentary lifestyle left excessive pain and stiffness in the neck, shoulders and upper limbs of the 45-year-old.
Thankfully for him, a meeting with Dr Avtar S Matharoo of Fortis Hospital changed his life for good. Matharoo's convinced Singh for cervical nucleotomy, making him the first patient in the country for the delicate procedure.
Dr Matharoo claimed that Gagandeep came to him with complaints of rigidness in his upper body. Singh had severe neck and shoulder pain and was unable to even turn my neck. A diagnosis revealed prolapsed (herniation) disc with compression of the exiting nerve roots along with thickening and swelling of facet joints or small joints in the vertebral column.
This forced Matharoo to consider cervical nucleotomy. During the operation, the prolapsed disc is removed with the help of a thick needle which is almost double the size of a normal injection needle under local anesthesia. A special cutting and sucking instrument pressurized by nitrogen shaves and removes herniated material.
